Freight Update: Fuel Surcharge Changes from Australia Post & StarTrack

Members should be aware of recent changes to fuel surcharges across major freight carriers.

Due to ongoing global fuel pressures, carriers across the market have implemented increases to their fuel surcharges. Australia Post has shared the following update to help APPA members navigate the current freight landscape.

What This Means for Your Business

Australia Post has emphasised that fuel surcharges are applied solely to recover rising fuel costs — they are not a profit driver — and that they continue to work to keep these as low as possible.

Current fuel surcharge rates are as follows:

  • Australia Post (eParcel): 12%
  • StarTrack: 22.7% (effective 23 April – 31 May)

For context, several other major carriers are currently operating at significantly higher surcharge levels:

  • TNT: 38.1%
  • FedEx International: 46.25%
  • CouriersPlease: 36.5% + 13.1% extraordinary surcharge
  • Toll (Road): 19.77%
  • Toll (Air): 15.48%

A Good Time to Review Your Freight Setup

With fuel costs continuing to fluctuate, now is a great opportunity for members to review their current freight arrangements and ensure they're getting the best value. If you're using alternative carriers and would like to explore options with Australia Post or StarTrack, their team is available to assist.
